Effect of Planting Time on the Growth and Bulb Formation of Northerm and southern Garlics Ecotypes in Cheju

Abstract
The possibility of growing northern type garlic in Cheju has been investigated. Growth and bulb formation were investigated on the northern and the southern type garlic as planted in different times of the year.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. There was big difference in emergence rate between two ecotypes, the southern type being 95% and northern type being 65%. However, there was little difference in emergence rate within each ecotype when compared by the planting dates.
2. Top growth was increased when garlic was planted earlier. The growth of northern type w as slower in growth than the southern type during the early growth period. However, this was reversed after May.
3. The earlier the planting dates, the earlier the time of clove differentiation. The dates of first clove differentiation were February 28 for the southern type and April 8 for the northern type.
4. The earlier the bulb formation, the time of bulb formation was mid-May for the southern type and early June for the northern type.
5. The earlier the planting dates, the greater the planting height, bulb weight and bulb diameter at harvest. The effect was apparent in the southern type than in the northern type.
6. The secondary growth was accelerated in late plantings in southern type but in early plantings in northern type.
